While the name indicates that the flowers
on this spiderwort are blue they are actually more purple than blue. The foliage
however aptly labeled. The bright golden yellow grass-like leaves provide a very
striking contrast for the brightly colored, triangular shaped blooms. These plants always
capture peoples attention in the shade garden where the colors seem to almost glow.
To bring out the best foliage color plants should be located where they can receive some
morning sun.
Spiderworts will grow in full sun or shade. If planted in full sun make
sure the soil stays consistently moist and mulch plants to keep the roots cool.
Plants bloom better if given some afternoon shade. Soil needs to be very rich in organic
matter and should be heavily amended with composted manure and peat moss. Feed in
early spring with a top dressing of compost and bone meal. Liquid feed once or twice
in the summer with fish emulsion.
