This variety of Thyme is considered to be the standard to which all other
varieties of thyme are compared. Plants grow upright to a height of 12 inches and have the
distinct aroma that everyone adores. Plants are grown for both their value in the
kitchen as well as the garden. In the landscape it is gorgeous no matter what the
season. The foliage is evergreen providing an anchor of color even in the winter.
In the spring English Thyme plants are covered with tiny white and pink flowers. In
the kitchen it can be used to flavor meats, stews and vegetables. Very easy to grow and
hardy down to 15 below zero.
Plants do best in full sun but will tolerate light shade. The most
important thing to remember when growing Thyme is to make sure they are planted in a soil
that drains well. Plants will quickly die if grown in soggy soils. When
setting out new plants be careful not to over water - let the soil dry out between
waterings. Thyme prefers a light, sandy soil so amend just enough to improve the
soils structure and drainage. Feed in the spring with a combination of blood and
bone meal. Liquid feed in summer with fish emulsion or compost tea.
