This species of Iris are one of the
most stunning, maintenance free perennials available. Plants are not only beautiful
but very rugged and easy to grow. Their graceful blooms appear in spring and their
grass-like foliage remains in the garden all season providing a vertical element of
texture. Siberian Iris prefer full sun but will grow fine in partial shade as well.
Plants like a decent garden soil that is slightly acidic but tolerate a wide range of soil
types. Their long fibrous root systems dive deep into the soil making plants very drought
tolerant once established - however newly planted plants will need to be watered well
until they have enough time to develop their root system. Plants benefit from a good layer
of mulch and will develop into larger clumps if a deep layer of mulch is maintained.
Feeding should be done in early spring and we suggest a top dressing of compost and
bone meal.
Siberian Iris
Zones: 3-9
Propagation: division
Problems: if not given enough sun the plant may suffer
Notes: While Siberian Iris are considered to be very drought
tolerant this is only true of "established" clumps. New plants must be kept
watered or they will quickly perish in summers heat.
