free and will grow in a wide range of climates ranging for zones 3 - 8. Platycodon, or
Balloon Flower, as it is more commonly known is characterized by the unopened flower buds
which look like tiny inflated balloons. As the bud matures the bud grows and appears as if
it going to burst. Once opened the buds reveal gorgeous star shaped flowers. A
truly outstanding perennial that is very easy to grow and will live for years.
Platycodon Balloon
Flowers
Plants should be grown in full sun to partial shade in good garden soil that has been
enriched with plenty of compost and peat moss. The planting site must be well
drained - Balloon Flowers will not survive in a spot that has poor drainage. Feed in
spring just as new growth begins to emerge with a top dressing of composted manure and
bone meal. Platycodon is one of the last plants to appear in spring so it is a good
idea to mark the plants location so that they are not mistaken for weeds and pulled up.
Since clumps are compact and spread slowly it is best to plant them in a spot where
they can remain undisturbed for many years. Cut spent flower stems all the way back
to the ground and then the entire plant as foliage begins to fade.
