Snow White Monarda
is the oldest variety we grow. It was introduced in 1955 and
has remained the best white Bee Balm we have ever grew. The
dainty pure white flowers are about half the size of the reds we
offer, but Snow White is just as showy. Being an older variety
it is not as resistant to powdery mildew so it is important that
plants do not become stressed from lack of water. Give the
plants a good deep saoking during dry spells and apply a good layer
of mulch to keep roots from drying out.
Plant in full sun and provide a rich well drained soil.
Plants can be grown in partial shade but will cause flowering to
decline. Fertilize in early spring with a top dressing of composted
manure and bone meal. Liquid feed once in the summer with
fish emulsion or a compost tea. Provide plants with extra water
during prolonged dry spells, dry soils promotes powdery mildew,
a fungal problem common in Monardas. Deadheading will promote
longer flowering. Plants spread rapidly by underground stems
and need to be divided every three years to keep them looking their
best.
