This Monarda gets its name from its flower
buds which resemble raspberries. The buds open up to reveal beautiful wine-red
flowers. Introduced to the gardening world by White Flower Farm of Litchfield
CT. The deep color of Raspberry Wine blends well with several colors and really
looks nice with shades of yellow. The Chicago Botanic Garden recently evaluated 39
varieties of Monarda of which 'Raspberry Wine' shared top honors. Very nice
perennial that gains in popularity every year.
Plant in full sun and provide a rich well drained soil. Plants can be
grown in partial shade but will cause flowering to decline. Fertilize in early spring with
a top dressing of composted manure and bone meal. Liquid feed once in the summer
with fish emulsion or a compost tea. Provide plants with extra water during
prolonged dry spells, dry soils promotes powdery mildew, a fungal problem common in
Monardas. Deadheading will promote longer flowering. Plants spread rapidly by
underground stems and need to be divided every three years to keep them looking their
best.
