Considered to be the very best
red Monarda on the market. Jacob Cline explodes with very large bright red flowers
just as summer begins. If you are looking for a plant that guarantees hummingbirds -
this is it. The little birds can not resist the huge, nectar rich flowers, and will
dart in and out of the garden all day feeding on them. The foliage is very nice
shade of green and is the most powdery mildew resistant variety of all the Monardas.
The leaves smell like mint when rubbed and can be used to flavor teas. Jacob Cline
was discovered growing in Georgia and was introduced to the gardening world by Saul
Nursery.
Plant in full sun and provide a rich well drained soil. Plants can be
grown in partial shade but will cause flowering to decline. Fertilize in early spring with
a top dressing of composted manure and bone meal. Liquid feed once in the summer
with fish emulsion or a compost tea. Provide plants with extra water during
prolonged dry spells, dry soils promotes powdery mildew, a fungal problem common in
Monardas. Deadheading will promote longer flowering. Plants spread rapidly by
underground stems and need to be divided every three years to keep them looking their
best.
