This herbaceous perennial
is one of the most stunning plants in the garden when in full bloom. A very
memorable sight for any gardener! Lupines are among the most admired perennials on the
market. They grow into considerable size clumps and are breath taking when planted
in large groups. Their flower spikes rise into the air above very attractive dark green
foliage - plants range from 2 - 3 feet in height. Lupines begin flowering in early
summer and remain in full bloom for about 4 - 5 weeks. While they are not the
easiest perennials to grow the extra effort required is well worth it.
Grow Lupines in full sun or very light shade. The must be planted in
very rich, slightly acidic soil that has been heavily amended with
composted manure and peat moss. Plants do not like their feet wet
so good drainage is a must especially during winter months.
Lupines thrive in cool climates and are therefore hard to grow in
southern areas where summers are long, dry and hot. To help
keep the roots cool apply a 3 - 4 inch layer of mulch and plant
in an area that receives some shelter from hot afternoon sun.
Remove spent flower heads to prolong blooming and help rejuvenate
the plant. Lupines do not require much feeding - their roots
actually fix nitrogen. Feed only with a top dressing of compost
mixed with bone meal in early spring.
