Large spikes of bright violet-purple
flowers open from top to bottom. Narrow grass-like leaves are up to 10 inches long at the
base of the plant and become smaller as they progress up the stems. Liatris adds a
very nice vertical element to the garden and will attract butterflies. Plants may
require staking if not protected from strong winds as this variety can grow up to 4 feet
in height.
Liatris 'spicata'
Plant in full sun to very light shade. Plants are not fussy about soil
types as long as the drainage is good. Liatris are grown from corms (resemble small
bulbs) and if allowed to sit in constantly wet soil the corms will rot. Very drought
resistant.
