Perennials at Gorge Top Gardens: Geraniums
These plants are hardy perennial
Geraniums - not the big showy ones you find in garden centers each spring. Believe it or
not those plants are not even in the Geranium family. Perennial Geranium's are considered
a garden treasure with well over 100 species. Sometimes referred to as
"Cranesbill" these plants come in a wide array of fabulous colors including some
very nice shades of violet-blue. Flowering occurs in early to mid spring and many new
varieties bloom on and off all season. Plants range from 6 inches tall to well over three
feet depending upon variety. Geraniums prefer light shade but will do just fine in full
sun if sheltered from hot afternoon sun. Plants like a loose soil that drains well.
Prepare your beds by turning in compost or leaf mold but do not use manure. Feeding should
be light and restricted to a top dressing of bone meal in early spring. We ship all
Geraniums as bareroot and recommend that you soak roots for 1 - 2 hours in luke-warm water
before planting. Geraniums are slow to establish themselves and will bloom sparingly in
their first year.
