Twenty some odd years ago this plant was considered
a native weed - now it is one of the most popular perennials in America. This gorgeous
plant is almost fool proof. Plants will tolerate poor dry soils that few other plants will
tolerate much less provide masses of colorful flowers. Butterflies just adore this plant
so plant it close by so you can admire the fluttering visitors. Echinacea purpurea begins
blooming in July and continues to produce vivid blossom thorough September. Flower heads
are more recurved than many of the cultivars. Plants require full sun and though not fussy
about soils will grow better if you will take the time to amend your soil. Plants
will not tolerate wet or soggy conditions so make sure the soil drains well. Deadhead the
plant to promote longer blooming but leave a few seed heads for the birds.
