Prized by
generations of gardeners, Bleeding Hearts are adored for their delicate chain of
blooms that dangle from arching stems. One of the most popular perennials of all
times, Dicentras are a true perennial classic. The dainty blooms appear on plants with
gorgeous fern-like foliage in early spring and last for about 5 - 6 weeks. A short bloom
time - but one of the most unique flowers in the garden. Dicentra plants prefer shade, or
filtered sunlight. Strong sun will cause the plants to loose color quickly and tends to
dry the foliage. Plants prefer a moist, rich, acidic soil. Before planting work plenty of
peat moss, manure and compost into the bed. Fertilize in early spring with a top dressing
of bone and blood meals. Bleeding hearts will not tolerate dry conditions and must
be watered during hot dry spells. Except for the occasional watering - Bleeding
Hearts are basically carefree. Plants will continue blooming for years without
dividing.
