Terry
Dowdeswell
Born in Nottingham England in 1948. His first job as a young man was as a
nursery worker, a natural fit as his father worked as a nuseryman as well. After
only a year Terry decided that nursery work was , as he said in his own words "to
much like work". Looking for something a little less back breaking he opted for a
position as a trainee as a Cost and Works accountant. This switch in employment seemed to
be more to his liking and helped him acquire skills that would become very useful later on
in life. He spent two years at this job before leaving England for his new home in
New Zealand.
He spent two more years inside an office and then completely switched
gears and became a pig farmer working at a large farm that raised hogs. As time
progressed Terry went back to work for his Father in a tomato growing business. In his
spare time he began to grow chrysanthemums. This proved to be very successful and he soon
had a business of his own raising mums for the cut flower trade.
In 1982 Terry and his wife learned that they both where allergic to
chrysanthemums and had suffered numerous health problems associated to the flowers
--(funny how life throws you curves). Terry and his wife, Janice soon began experimenting
with several other different crops and along the way discovered Delphiniums.
Terry and Janice are the owners of Dowdeswell Delphiniums, a company dedicated to
producing high quality seed for the horticultural trade. Terry has developed many superior
varieties of Delphiniums over the years and has introduced some of the best cultivars
available on the market today.
