Perennials at Gorge Top Gardens: Crocosmia
Also known as Montbretia, Crocosmia
grown from corms, is not really classified as a herbaceous perennial but rather a summer
flowering bulb. The plants form dense clumps of iris-like foliage that can add a
great spiky element to the garden. Flowers are brilliant reds, oranges and yellows
that appear on arching stems. In a sudden explosion of color -blooming begins in July and
continues through most of September. A very tough plant that survives in the garden
- even neglected areas where everything else has disappeared. Plant Crocosmia corms about
3 inches deep in a soil that has been properly amended with organic materials. Soil needs
to be well drained or the corms will rot. Plants prefer full sun, but will do fine in
light shade. In colder areas such as Zone 5 the corms should be protected with an
extra layer of mulch or shredded leaves. Clumps will need to be lifted and divided every 2
- 3 years. Fertilize in early spring with a top dressing of bone and blood meals - no
further feeding is required. If you want to control the spreading of these plants you will
need to cut off the faded flowers to prevent them from setting seed.
