While limited in its range of gardening
zones, Bergenia is an excellent perennial for shade. Often refereed to as Pig
Squeak, this evergreen, groundcover is only suggested for Zones 6 and warmer. Bergenia can
be successfully grown in cooler zones if you have a suitable microclimate area in your garden. Plants have large,
rounded leaves, approximately 8-12 inches in length. Foliage is leathery and glossy green
which tuns red in the fall. Gorgeous clusters of flowers appear on short stems from
mid spring through early summer. Plants prefer partial shade but will grow in sunny areas
that are protected from strong afternoon sun. For best results Bergenia should be planted
in a well composted, rich organic soil that is moist but well drained. Feed lightly
with a top dressing of bone and blood meals in early spring and provide a fresh layer of
mulch around the plants before winter sets in.
