Perennials at Gorge Top Gardens: Baptisia
This genus consists of about 35 species of North
American perennials. Baptisia has been adored by gardeners for decades and is
considered to be one of the greatest backbone plants for perennial borders. Growing
to three to four feet, this amazing plant bears vivid blue flowers that appear in late
spring on 36: stems. Foliage is grey green and remains attractive all season.
Flowers are followed by dark seed pods creating another visual interest.
Plants look great by themselves and are breathtaking when combined with Peonies,
Columbines, Bearded Iris, Poppies and other late spring (late May / early June here in
zone 6) blooming perennials. Baptisias are very easy to grow and long lived.
Plants have long tap roots that grow deeply into the soil giving it the ability to
survive long dry spells and making it a challenge to transplant successfully - so make
sure you plant it in area you intend to keep it. Grow Baptisia in full sun in an
average to dry soil. Feed in early spring with a top dressing of manure and bone
meal. Feed again in mid summer with blood and bone meal.
