Perennials at Gorge Top Gardens: Achillea
Commonly known as Yarrow, are vigorous
perennials ranging in heights form 6 inches to 4 feet. Achilleas have flat flower
heads that are long lasting and come in lovely range of colors including shades of pink,
yellow, apricot, crimson and white. Yarrow is very easy to establish in the
perennial garden and is not fussy about soils. They are drought tolerant plants preferring
full sun but can be grown in light shade. Yarrow, being a very vigorous grower, may
need to be kept in check to ensure that it does not invade upon other plants in the
garden. Many of the newer cultivars are less invasive than the species. For
the best visual effect Achillea is best grown in large drifts.
Zones: 3 - 8
Propagation: lift and divide in late fall or early spring
Problems: no specific pest or disease problems
Cutting: excellent cut flower with long vase life
Notes: deadheading and pruning will prolong bloom period
Growing Achillea from seed: Achillea can be grown successfully from
seed. Seed germinates in about 14 -21 days with a soil temperature between 65 - 70F,
do not allow soil to dry during the germination process. Seed will need to
lightly covered with horticulture grade vermiculite - don't cover with soil as Yarrow or
Achillea seed needs light to germinate.
