Virtually 98% of all Hostas sold by nurseries
and garden centers started out as tissue culture. This technique is used widely in the
nursery business and is a very useful tool that allows for rapid reproduction of
genetically identical plants using small amounts of time and space. The technique
consists of taking a small piece of the plant, such as a stem tip or node and
placing it in a sterile nutrient medium that is placed in a sterile container such as a
test tube or even a baby food jar. The container is used to control the growing
environment and nutrition. If you are interested in learning more about tissue
culture visit the sites we have listed below.
We once ran across
a posting in a discussion group where some self proclaimed "hosta expert" was
spouting off that Hostas produced from tissue culture where inferior plants and not worth
the hole they are planted in --- his words not ours. It was obvious that this guy
did not know what he was talking about. Without the science of tissue culture we
would only have a small fraction of the Hosta cultivars available today. Tissue
culture is widely recognized by leading Horticulturists as one of the best methods for
propagating Hostas.
