Perennial Gardening Tips:
Soil Preparation: For the best results it always a good
idea to amend your soil. Most of us are not blessed with rich soil.
The best way to get your soil ready for planting is using a technique
called "double digging". First dig a whole about 12 ato
14 inches wide with and equal depth. Place the removed soil into
a wheel barrel and add two shovel fulls of peat moss and three shovel
fulls of a good quality compost. Next add two hand fulls of bone
meal and one hand full of blood meal. Mix the soil well making sure
to mix the amendments equally. Dump the amended soil back into the
hole and use your shovel to further loosen the surrounding soil.
This process will give your new perennial plants a good loose, nutrient
rich soil to establish themselves in. We can not stress enough that
the success rate of your gardening efforts are reliant on a good
soil structure.
Feeding: Most perennials will benefit from an early spring
feeding followed by a mid summer feeding. We recommend that you
add a top dressing of well rotted manure or compost to the plants
in early spring just as new growth starts to appear. In mid summer
around the end of June of middle of July feed again with bone meal
and blood meal. Liquid fertilizers such as Miracle Gro can be used
but recommend that you use them at half strength. Over feeding will
result in increased leaf and stem growth at the expense of flowering.
Over fertilizing can also result in weak stems that are unable to
support flower weight. Most perennials are very light feeders -
keep this in mind and you will enjoy remarkable success.
